Our household had a similar reaction to the commercial. We also were frustrated by the underlying comment that exercising your body is a worthy goal, but exercising your mind, apparently, is not. AI may have the potential for vast improvements in our society, but dumbing down the populace is a dangerous path to tread.

This is my constant fear as a middle school teacher. 6th and 7th graders, by their very nature, seek out what's easy. These are times when burgeoning writers will have to fight hard for the right to practice productive struggle, a cornerstone to grit which is necessary to a satisfying life.

Liz, I couldn't have said it better... but at the same time, I yearn to try! I'm always yearning to find my own words for my own thoughts. Without that yearning, I'd feel like a ghost. If I could only persuade all my students to cherish that creative instinct, to never ever give it away. This tech and these commercials make me downright queasy.

I have so many feelings about AI. I want to love it, but as you eloquently explained, we are losing our humanity.

Thank you, Liz, for this piece! I’m going to use it with my AP Lang class in our first days to establish our own feelings about writing and AI and set some goals for building our “beating, yearning, thinking hearts.” Keep writing!
